How to guess der, die or das: the ending rules

German gender looks arbitrary, but roughly 80% of nouns are predictable from their ending — these are the ones worth memorising:

Masculine — der

  • -er (person/tool) → der Lehrer (teacher)
  • -ling → der Frühling (spring)
  • -ismus → der Tourismus (tourism)
  • -ant / -ent → der Elefant (elephant)
  • days, months, seasons, weather → der Montag, der Regen

Feminine — die

  • -ung → die Zeitung (newspaper)
  • -heit / -keit → die Freiheit (freedom)
  • -schaft → die Mannschaft (team)
  • -ion / -tät → die Nation, die Universität
  • -e (most of them) → die Lampe (lamp)

Neuter — das

  • -chen / -lein (diminutives) → das Mädchen (girl)
  • -ment → das Instrument (instrument)
  • -um → das Museum (museum)
  • -tum → das Eigentum (property)
  • verbs used as nouns → das Schwimmen (swimming)

These are strong tendencies, not laws — das Mädchen is neuter even though a girl is female. The safest habit is to learn every noun together with its article, as if der/die/das were part of the word. Read the full der die das guide →

Der, die, das — questions & answers

How do I know if a German word is der, die or das?

There is no rule based on meaning — gender comes with the noun. Endings are the strongest hint (-ung, -heit, -keit, -schaft are feminine; -chen, -lein, -ment, -um are neuter; -er, -ling, -ismus are usually masculine), and quizzing yourself turns the rest into memory.

Why does the quiz never show plural words?

In the plural every German noun takes die, so a plural would not reveal anything about its real gender. Words like die Schuhe (from der Schuh) are left out on purpose — this quiz only uses singular nouns whose article shows the gender.

Does getting der, die or das wrong really matter?

People will still understand you, but German cases change the article (der becomes den, dem, des), and adjectives follow the gender too. One wrong gender therefore ripples through the whole sentence, so drilling it early keeps the rest of your German clean.
