How to know de or het: the rules that actually help

Roughly 75% of Dutch nouns are de-words, so the efficient strategy is to learn the het-words and treat everything else as de. These patterns cover most of them:

Common gender — de

  • -ing → de wandeling (the walk)
  • -heid → de vrijheid (freedom)
  • -ij / -erij → de bakkerij (bakery)
  • -tie / -teit → de politie, de kwaliteit
  • people, fruit, trees, flowers, vegetables → de dokter, de appel

Neuter — het

  • -je (every diminutive) → het huisje (little house)
  • ge- / be- / ver- / ont- + no ending → het gebouw (building)
  • -ment / -um / -isme → het moment, het museum
  • languages, metals, sports → het Nederlands, het goud, het voetbal
  • nouns made from verbs → het zwemmen (swimming)

Two shortcuts worth remembering: every diminutive ending in -je is het (het meisje), and every plural is de — het huis becomes de huizen. Beyond that, learn each noun together with its article, as if de/het were part of the word. Read the full de or het guide →

De or het — questions & answers

How do I know whether a Dutch word is de or het?

There is no rule based on meaning. About three quarters of nouns take de, so the shortcut is to memorise the het-words: diminutives in -je, nouns starting with ge-/be-/ver-/ont-, languages, metals, sports, and words ending in -ment, -um or -isme. Everything else is almost always de.

Why does the quiz never show plural words?

Every Dutch plural takes de, whatever the singular article was — het boek becomes de boeken. A plural would therefore never test what you actually need to know, so this quiz only uses singular nouns.

Does getting de or het wrong really matter?

People will understand you, but the article decides the adjective ending (het kleine huis vs de kleine tuin) and which relative pronoun you use (dat vs die). One wrong article shows up several words later, which is why native speakers notice it immediately.
